One of my favorite pieces in this year’s student show at the Art Center was this chess set. Made from clay, creatures from land and see lined up to battle it out on the chess board.

It was tough to choose, but I decided to root for the fish.  The artist cleverly selected seahorses for the knights, dolphins for the bishops, and blue octopus for the castles.  The sharks made dramatic royalty, and the stripped fish were the perfect pawns.

The land creatures were equally charming, with monkeys as the pawns.  The king and queen of the jungle, the lions sat in their proper place, flanked by giraffe, zebra and of course the elephants.
