The Matisse exhibit at the IMA gives tremendous insight into the mind of this artist. Instead of arranging the art by year the pieces are in collections so you can see the evolution of his technique. As a young artist, he painted what he saw.
As he matured he painted what he felt, sometimes distorting reality to help us feel it to. This sculpture, one of a series of nudes is such a piece. As you look at the painting behind it you see the woman was originaly reclining in a chair. But the sculpture, strips away the chair giving us this sense of her struggling to keep her balance.
The exhibit will be here till January. Make time to go see it.
