Last night we went to the preview of a new restaurant on Mass Ave. Bakersfield on east side of the avenue close to downtown, they hope to build a reputation for Tequila, Tacos and Whisky. While I can’t comment on the third element of their brand, I can give you a ringing endorsement of the first two.

Everything on the menu is made fresh and clearly with a love of cooking.  We started with the guacamole, and were delighted to find large chunks of avocado in the bowl.   There is a strong, but not overpowering taste of lime and the radishes give it a nice finish on top.

We also had the caso, complete with home made, pickled jalapeno.  Served, very hot in a small skillet, this is a terrific way to open a meal.

Their tacos are similar in size and price to the ones you find in some of the local food trucks.  But that is where the similarity ends.  The meats are  tender and flavorful. The chef clearly knows what to serve with each one.  You order the tacos individually, and at $4.00 each, you can afford to experiment and try several.  We tried the short rib, mole, fish and corn.   While Andy like the fish best, I really liked the short rib.

I wanted to try everything, but those small tacos ( and margaritas) are surprisingly filling.  So I guess I will have to go back.   But only for dinner.  At least in the short term, Bakersfield Mass Ave opens at 4 PM every day. March-8-017
