Originally the summer home of royalty, Belem is now an affluent suburb of Lisbon. Located where the Targas River flows into the sea it has always been a departure point for ships sailing out to sea.

The Tower of Belem rises out of the water as a gateway to adventure for ancient sailors

It is hard to get my head around how these massive structures were built hundreds of years ago.
The best part of the trip was a chance to taste the famous Pastries of Belem.
